Best Mobile Couponing Solution

First of all what's Mobile Couponing?

Mobile coupons may represent special offers, attractive joint promotions and a value/percentage discounts or anything else that traditional printed coupons provide, but stored in any mobile phone/handset .

The mobile coupon can be distributed via SMS, MMS, bluetooth, wappush, email,... – enabling a one-to-one marketing approach. Anytime and anywhere, people are able to receive mobile coupons.

Mobile Couponing - How it Works?

Customers register on a web site, a call center, or directly at a point-of-sale, giving permission for the reception of special gifts and promotions.

When a Mobile Couponing campaign (direct marketing) is launched, registered clients receive "mobile coupons" (discount coupons), which are sent to the mobile phone via SMS or MMS technology, and stored on the phone.

Each "mobile coupon" has a unique special encrypted code in the form of a symbol (2D Code), making the "mobile coupons" very secure, easy to verify and impossible to fake.

Optical readers at the points-of-sale verify the "mobile coupons" efficiently reading the special code from the mobile phone display. The code is validated against a central Mobile Couponing Solution (with the mobile coupon database) and redeemed by printing a unique paper voucher.

McDonald’s ™ adopts Mobile Couponing

May 01, 2006 - LISBON (Portugal)

McDonald’s ™, the world’s leading foodservice retailer, launch mobile couponing campaigns using TopVoucher solution in restaurants

McDonalds

With this project McDonald’s ™ Portugal becomes the first restaurant chain efficiently and successfully using mobile couponing promotions.

M-Marketing Channels

McDonald’s ™ mobile couponing campaigns are broadcasted via different channels accessible and managed through TopSolutions m-marketing platform:

SMS or MMS - registered members from TMN marketing database (X-Mensagem) receive a mobile discount voucher as code in a picture message (SMS or MMS) to their mobile phone, enabling them to receive McDonald’s ™ discounts. Customers who are not registered in this TMN database can also request the mobile coupons by sending an SMS to a McDonald’s ™ number.

Bluetooth – During the Happy-hour (between 3:00 p.m and 7:00 p.m.) customers can also benefit with special discounts, having the Bluetooth feature available and active near the McDonald’s ™ restaurants. Through this channel customers receive as well a special code in their mobile-phone to be automatically redeemed at the restaurants kiosks.

How it works?

MMS

The unique and encrypted bi-dimensional code sent on the user’s mobile phone contains information like restaurant name, vouchers, discounts amount as well as an expiration date. In addition, it ensures that the mobile coupon will be redeemed only once (fulfilling all campaign requisites).

McDonalds

Directly at the McDonald’s ™ restaurants, customers can print and convert their mobile coupon, having instant benefits from McDonald’s ™ discounts and special offers.

McDonalds

Installed in McDonald’s ™ restaurants, custom-made kiosks with a matchless scanner are used to scan the mobile coupon directly from the phone’s screen. Using the built-in GSM-module (GPRS), the kiosk verifies on-line the validity of the coupon against a central database and, in case of a valid coupon, prints out unique paper vouchers redeemable at the cash register.

This project come forward as an association between TopSolutions, McDonald’s ™ and TMN, and clearly represents an important landmark regarding mobile couponing in Europe.

About McDonald’s ™

McDonald’s ™ is the world’s leading foodservice retailer with more than 30,000 restaurants serving nearly 47 million people in more than 100 countries each day. In Portugal, McDonald’s ™ have 117 restaurants, most of them managed by its franchisees.

Hi,
I have been followed closely TopSolutions and Gavitec. I always think that Gavitec has probably the best solutions for mobile tickets, mobile coupons, mobile check-in,...
Gavitec has developed Lavasphere which is a key component of Glass.
http://www.activeprint.org/glass.html
Gavitec has partnered with Regisoft, TopSolutions, HP Labs Bristol, Siemens Business Services,...
Publicis Groupe, HP Labs Bristol, Gavitec (a Neomedia company, and Neomedia just created the Mobile Codes Consortium
http://www.activeprint.org/MC2MS.pdf

I was just curious to know why do you think that "TopVoucher" is the best solution for Mobile couponing.

Best regards

Hi dlethe01,

I think you deserve to know that I have a lot of experience on selecting software platforms for big companies.

When selecting the best 2006 mobile couponing solution I use the following criteria:

• Truly mass-market solution for all kind of mobile-phones/handsets (without exceptions)
• Best automatic "handset display reading capability"
• Real projects with real brands (not bull...)
• Channels available (SMS, MMS, WapPush, Bluetooth,...)
• Best marketing info available of projects and products
• Overall expertise

In fact the Gavitec readers used by these guys are the best in the market, but as you may understand a solution for mobile couponing is a lot more then readers/hardware…

As you know many other Gavitec partners have access to the Exio equipments and I can’t find much more then few pilots with few info.

If you find other mobile couponing solution provider with such a proven track record, please let me know.

P.S.
Taking into consideration your information level about Neomedia I can easily guess that you might be a Neomedia shareholder.
So, let me tell you what I think about Neomedia.
I think they have great patents but they don’t have enough technical human resources to put things on the road on time (e.g. Qode).

Hi Doanh Le,

Thank you once again for your feedback.

Although I think you don’t clear understand that my post is exclusively about m-couponing solutions (within m-marketing solutions). I’m not talking about m-ticketing, m-loyalty, m-checkin, m-parking or any other mobile solution.

I’m certain that you understand the differences, but some of my readers may not realize.

Kind Regards

Please note WAYIN no longer uses NeoMedia 's GAVITEC EXIO and now uses IKANATECH 'S PORTO (http://www.ikanatech.com) which is a battery powered unit and is much smaller than the EXIO which has a lot of printer problems. Hopefully GAVITEC can fix the EXIO's many problems and make the price more reasonable for what it is supplying.
Wayin (http://www.wayin.co.za) and Eishtickets (http://www.eishtickets.co.za) currently use the Ikanatech Porto .

Wayin is using that South African Terminal for a current project in the own country, that is right.
That Wayin is not using the Gavitec's EXIO anymore and that there is a printer problem indicated by Wayin is simply not the truth.
Gavitec's quality is probably the best in the market. The scan performance is simply the best in the market, that is for sure.

Referring to the above comment:

Wayin has a new technology partner in Ikanatech. The "Porto" scanner is a great alternative to the Exio, and comes at a fraction of the cost. The scanner has been tested and used in the market by Wayin and the results are excellent. Both Ikanatech and Wayin are based in South Africa.

Wayin continues to use / promote the Gavitec Exio. The Exio has been tried and tested internationally, and has served us well. We cannot complain about the performance, nor the printer - there are no problems whatsoever.

Unfortunately the cost of the Exio rose dramatically at the beginning of 2007, therefore it is not feasible for us to consider reselling to most clients now that the Porto is available.

Fact is, Wayin has bought 2 demo units from us and they were very unpleasant customers. Import price of the EXIO is high and therefore (and despite of their assessment that the EXIO package is better in performance) they have opted for a standard HHP 2d scanner with an add on terminal - the same kind of low level work-around solution some other companies try to establish. This is not a serious product and not a serious operation...

I received an email from Chris Foure, Operations and Technical Director at WAYIN. He said that
Wayin still uses Regisoft's technology and jointly uses hardware from Gavitecs and Ikanatech Porto's.
Furthermore, he said that EXIO doesn't have any major printer problems that have not been fixed.

hello houdini,
if you have a problem with wayin, please contact us directly. do not make posts saying we are unpleasant customers as it is not a very professional thing to do.
i apologise for richricio's comments but cannot control them.

1. we do have two demo units from gavitec.
2. we still use them for certain jobs as they are a reliable piece of hardware.
if anyone would like to contact Wayin please email info@wayin.co.za

Please let me clarify...

Wayin does not have a problem with the Exio printer and still continues to use the scanners.

The problem with the Exio in South Africa is its large price tag - it is simply not an option in this country. Last year the price was high but within reach, but this year, due to a new supplier agreement, the price is nearly double.

Wayin has found a quality alternative to the Exio, at a fraction of the cost.

While the Exio remains a great product, it is unable to compete in South Africa at that price. The Ikanatech Porto is just one of several more affordable options in this country and these products will dominate because they are affordable.

Wayin has questioned Gavitec's price for the Exio several times, and maybe that is annoying to them. However Wayin has not been an unpleasant customer of theirs.
